To participate and be successful in a year-long writing and publishing project, students must learn diligence and persistence. Participation requires a huge commitment by both student and parents. It's hard work, but the pay-off is that the student learns to set goals, be responsible and independent, manage his time, stick with a project from beginning to end, and create a quality product.
In this case, the student is a superior writer. He's very talented. He just thought that he could work hard for half the year and then slack off. What he had at the end of May was the first half of a great novel; unfortunately he didn't finish it. (I hope he DOES finish it this year!)
I learned that sometimes the best teaching comes from saying no; for reminding a student that his ideas are worthy of the best work he is capable of.
