DAY 16: Yesterday was a party in my novel-writing classroom. Imagine 15 doughnut-crazed home school kids from ages 9-12, chattering excitedly about the upcoming publication of their own books! Our publisher from Third Place Press, Vladimir Verano, joined us for the ruckus, and the kids had a chance to show him what they're currently working on. I asked him, from a publisher's standpoint, what sort of cover draws in a middle-grade reader. "Kids don't care about covers," he said, "adults do. Kids don't BROWSE for books; they TALK ABOUT books." Of course he's generalizing, but it was an aha for me . . . even more than designing a brilliant cover, generating a buzz about My Own Magic will be the secret to its success. And I kind of love that content matters more than packaging. Kids are so smart. :)
